Knoxville Vets Day

Saturday, June 21st was the last Vets Day to be held at the VA Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa.

It was one of the most rewarding days I’ve ever had. After helping out in the service line, I went with others to help a wheelchair patient. We wheeled them to the dining hall and served them a meal and we spent the day with all of them.

Jason Brown was the entertainment. After the concert we helped our resident back to his room.

I never knew that I could have that much fun volunteering to work all day. It will be a day I will never forget.

In Solidarity,
Marcella Stewart

The Missing Man Table Ceremony

Please be seated . . . I would like to explain the meaning of the items on this special table.

The table is round to show our everlasting concern for our men still missing.

The cloth is white symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to duty.

The single red rose displayed in a vase reminds us of the life of each of the missing and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith awaiting answers.

The vase is tied with a red ribbon, a symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing.

A slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured and missing in a foreign land.

A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

The glass is inverted to symbolize their inability to share this evening’s toast.

The chairs are empty— they are missing.

Let us now raise our water glasses in a toast to honor America’s POW/MIAs and to the success of our effort to account for them.

The Oktemberfest Parade was a success. The float received numerous comments during the parade.  The committee did a wonderful job and everyone enjoyed it. The day was picture perfect, just a little cool at the beginning but very nice later.

Pets for Vets

On January 18th members of our Veterans’ Committee did another “Pets for Vets” at the Iowa Veterans’ Home.

Tom Anderson from Unit 1 joined us and used a day of his vacation to participate that day just because he cares. He brought with him a very sweet and popular dog named Sonny.

The Committee members worked their shifts then spent the entire day with the Veterans.

All the dogs were very popular and it’s hard to call them dogs, as they are our family members

If you have experienced the military life, you know about family. You become one, in the military you are brothers and sisters just like our Union. You need your brothers sisters in front of you and behind you.

The idea for “Pets for Vets” came from research about pet therapy and veterans. It shows what the impact is of an animal contact can mean from pets. In recent years the experts have been relying on pet therapy as a valued tool. Before you ask NO our furry family members are not certified therapy friends. Maybe this would be a good opportunity for us to get something like this started? As information available shows love is the most important tool even more so than medicine. Researchers have also found of all the things that are deadly it is loneliness and grief. Pets have a calm and gentle disposition and are very people-oriented.

Our Veterans are well worth that small enjoyment with pet visits, don’t you think? We are hoping that the next time you have the time, visit the Iowa Veterans Home with your furry family member.
